Synopsis
Set over the course of one school year in 1986, this is the story of two star-crossed misfits-smart enough to know that first love almost never lasts, but brave and desperate enough to try. When Eleanor meets Park, you’ll remember your own first love—and just how hard it pulled you under.
Thoughts
I read this book for the Gen X nostalgia and because I enjoyed Fangirl so much. I loved the story’s plethora of pop culture references, from Nintendo and Punky Brewster to mix tapes and MTV. In Rowell’s trademark style, the story was both gritty and heartwarming. Her character-building is phenomenal, so I find myself truly caring for her characters. This book captures the sweet and the sour of the high school years while integrating other impactful social issues such as domestic violence, racism, and classism. I adored Eleanor and Park, but side characters such as Eleanor’s younger siblings, Park’s mom, and their English teacher added depth. This is a cast of colorful characters that I will not soon forget. Although I was left wanting a more defined ending, I also thought it was perfect.
