ARC Review: Nine Tailed by Jayci Lee

by Krista

❥ Thank you for the free book, author Jayci Lee.

SYNOPSIS

Sunny Cho aspires to be the dullest, least interesting person in any room, which can be challenging for a nine-tailed fox spirit. So, she drifts from city to city—staying clear of any and all attachment—and keeps her fox buried deep inside her. She would rather live as half of herself than risk losing control of her powers.

Ethan Lee, a friend she left behind eight years ago, is a brilliant and hot PI. When he tracks Sunny down and asks her to help him find his brother’s murderer, she knows her life is about to change.

Traversing the mortal realm and the world of gods, Sunny and Ethan discover their quest is much more dire than vengeance, and their friendship might be more. An ancient evil is stirring, and Sunny is faced with the impossible choice between saving the worlds from annihilation or claiming love.

Thoughts

I loved this story! Lee poured so much heart into this book, and it shows. First, the cover design is stunning. I couldn’t imagine a more beautiful nine-tailed fox. Second, it has a mini map. We all know that a proper fantasy novel needs a map! Third, it includes a short guide on pronouncing Romanized Korean. There is little worse than finding out that you’ve been pronouncing characters’ names and other major bits wrong, so this is a lovely touch. Skipping to the back of the book, there is a helpful glossary, too.

Now, for this sweet story, steeped in Korean mythology. It is a beautiful blend of fantasy, folklore, contemporary romance, and mystery. Despite its mix of different genres, I did not feel that the story was stretched too thin. The world building is wonderful and the characters are vibrant. The dual timelines make perfect sense. This story has action, adventure, love, and heartbreak. I absolutely can’t wait to see where the Realm of Four Kingdoms series takes us next.
