♡ Thank you for the free book, Sourcebooks Landmark and author Costanza Casati.

Synopsis

Nothing about Semiramis’s upbringing could have foretold her legacy or the power she would come to wield. A female ruler, once an orphan raised on the outskirts of an empire, certainly no one in Ancient Assyria would bend to her command willingly. Semiramis was a woman who knew that she would have to claim power if she wanted it. There are whispers of her fame in Mesopotamian myth, but historical record falls quiet. So, Casati weaves myth and history to create this powerful retelling.

Thoughts

This was an incredibly well-written and gut-wrenching story. I experienced many negative emotions while reading it, but I also witnessed hope, love, and loyalty in various forms. I did not enjoy the love triangle, especially since it involved half-brothers. However, Costanza did a beautiful job of creating complex characters with facets and interconnections, which added heart and humanity to this book. Please check trigger warnings, as there are themes of violence, abuse, death, and mental health issues included in this story. Pick this book up if you enjoy historical fiction, retellings, mythology, closed door romance, strong female main characters, or Game of Thrones vibes.
