Book Review: Daisy Jones & The Six by Taylor Jenkins Reid

by Krista

Synopsis

Daisy is a girl coming of age in L.A. in the late sixties, sneaking into clubs on the Sunset Strip, sleeping with rock stars, and dreaming of singing at the Whisky a Go Go. The sex and drugs are thrilling, but it’s the rock ’n’ roll she loves most. By the time she’s twenty, her voice is getting noticed, and she has the kind of heedless beauty that makes people do crazy things.

Also getting noticed is The Six, a band led by the brooding Billy Dunne. On the eve of their first tour, his girlfriend Camila finds out she’s pregnant, and with the pressure of impending fatherhood and fame, Billy goes a little wild on the road.

Daisy and Billy cross paths when a producer realizes that the key to supercharged success is to put the two together. What happens next will become the stuff of legend.

The making of that legend is chronicled in this riveting and unforgettable novel, written as an oral history of one of the biggest bands of the seventies.

Introduction

A few months after graduating college and moving to Phoenix on a whim, I was fortunate enough to attend the Fleetwood Mac reunion concert in October of 1997. I still talk about this surreal musical experience, and how ethereal Stevie looked on that warm fall evening as her flowing black dress and long, sultry hair danced in the soft breeze. It was nothing short of amazing! So, it may be a bit surprising that I had not read this book, inspired by Stevie and the band, until recently.

Thoughts

OMG! Why did I wait so long?

This book captures the spirit of that time perfectly. From the effortlessly cool band members who played some of the best music the world has ever seen, to the drug and alcohol abuse on the scene, it all feels so accurate. The writing style, told through interviews, helps to provide so much depth to each character. It makes me wonder if Reid found a time machine in which to travel back to that era in order to take impeccable notes for this amazing novel.

Beyond the writing style and vibe, I really enjoyed this story and how it was all wrapped up in the end. Daisy Jones & The Six found its way into my heart and secured a place in my list of favorite books. If you haven’t read it, please do— it’s a glamorous and gritty masterpiece!
