Book Review: Frankenstein by Mary Shelley

by Krista

Synopsis

Frankenstein is a combination of Gothic novel and science fiction. It unfolds the story of scientist Victor Frankenstein who creates a hideous monster from pieces of corpses and brings it to life. But the monster eventually becomes the source of his misery and demise. The plot of the novel is epistolary. The story is narrated through the first-person accounts of Captain Walton, Victor Frankenstein, and the monster himself.

Thoughts

I had wanted to read this book for so long, and it made the perfect October read. If you have not yet read it, forget everything you know from the movies and be ready for a moving story.

I was not prepared for this darkly beautiful and emotional read. This book made me feel that, similar to Jane Austen, Mary Shelley had a firm grasp on people. In this story—from dialogues to internal struggles—Shelley masterfully captured what it means to be human versus monster. This thought-provoking book will be on my mind for some time.
