Book Review: The Enchanted April by Elizabeth von Arnim
In my book, it’s a great day when you get to read an amazing classic that you had not yet met. The Literary Book Club introduced me to this book, and I loved it! First published in 1922, I enjoyed reading this timeless piece over a century later.
Synopsis
The women at the center of this story are alike only in their dissatisfaction with their everyday lives. They find each other—and the castle of their dreams—through a classified ad in a London newspaper one rainy February afternoon. The ladies expect a pleasant holiday, but they don’t anticipate that the month they spend in Portofino will reintroduce them to their true natures and reacquaint them with joy. Now, if the same transformation can be worked on their husbands and lovers, the enchantment will be complete.
Thoughts
This is such a beautiful story. It is a bit of a feminist piece for its time, and I love that! I adore everything about this book, from the sassy banter to the picturesque locations. Pick this up if you want a historical fiction book that focuses on friendship and personal growth in a beautiful setting.
